Law Enforcement Cabinets

Law Enforcement Cabinets

Converting a vehicle into a law enforcement vehicle takes a professional up-fitting company and some forethought as to the equipment you want to put in it. We will be discussing emergency lights, sirens, radios and graphics, but we should first talk about what type of vehicle cabinet systems you will need. There are cabinets for almost any mission and these systems many times can be customized to meet whatever requirements you have. The requirements may change depending on your vehicle type because the vehicle type will dictate the amount of space you have and the configurations of the cabinet.

Remember years ago when you were driving down the highway and you looked out your rear view mirror and saw that Ford Crown Vic? Right away you knew it a police officer because no civilian in their right mind would drive one of these cars. Well, this is now a thing of the past. Ford stopped making the Crown Vic in 2011. Ford claimed that the Crown Vic was not efficient on gas mileage so they started producing the Ford Explorer Interceptor Utility Vehicle which they claimed had better gas mileage both on the road and when idle. For police departments that did not switch to SUV’s and opted to stay with a sedan, the Dodge Charger is a popular model as well as the Ford Taurus. Police departments have a few different options when it comes to installing a cabinet system into their sedans. The options are a cabinet in the trunk of the cabinet systems that are installed into sedans go in the trunk.

The trunk cabinet system can be set up in three main ways.

  • Floor Cabinet – cabinet sits on the floor of the trunk.
  • Hanging Cabinet – cabinet is mounted to the deck of the trunk.

Cabinet Systems for Interceptor SUV’s

Law enforcement sedans have typically been the vehicle of choice for most police departments and law enforcement vehicles. But over the last few years, the Ford Interceptor SUV has taken over as the most popular police patrol vehicle. Law enforcement sports utility vehicles are used for community patrol and highway patrol as well as crime scene investigations and command and control operations.  The SUV has become an extremely versatile law enforcement vehicle used in almost every town, municipality and branch of law enforcement. However, a traditional full size cabinet system does not allow any access to the spare tire which is located under the floor in the cargo area of the vehicle. This issue together with a statement from Ford that it is mandatory to keep the spare tire in the vehicle in order to maintain the crash rating, prompted many cabinet manufacturers to come up with a new design which allows access to the spare tire.

  • T-Style System – a weapons locker on top of two smaller storage drawers forming the shape of the letter “T”. The 22″ deep cabinet system is mounted to a hinged platform and sits towards the front of the vehicle leaving enough room to lift the tire out of the well.
  • Elevated Cabinet System – full size cabinet drawer sits on stilted brackets leaving enough room for removal of the spare tire.
  • Cut out Platform System  – a full size cabinet that is bolted to a platform that has a cut out large enough to lift the spare tire out of the well. This is done by removing the drawer.

Command Cabinets

A command cabinet system is probably the most popular cabinet system for any law enforcement, fire or EMS personnel. Having a command board in your cabinet system gives so many more options to the person in charge of the scene. Command cabinet systems come in many different sizes and styles such as full depth and half depth, full height and half height.  The style of a command cabinet can be configured in many ways such as including storage drawers, files drawers, open compartments or compartments with a door. These options are totally up to the preference and needs of the individual using the cabinet system. Command cabinets can be put in any vehicle, but are used mostly in any SUV.

If you are having a front console placed in your law enforcement vehicle, you will have options depending on the make and model of your vehicle. These systems are typically used to mount communication equipment such as radios, lights and sirens as well as computer docking stations.

The lights that are put in these systems can vary from one LED light to LED red/white light. Some consoles are square boxes and some are contoured to fit the headliner.

Weapons Racks & Cabinets Systems

Weapons racks are used by many law enforcement vehicles to secure and transport rifles and shotguns. If a SWAT team is using a weapons locker to transport weapons and gear, they will most likely use a system in the back of their van because of the quantity of weapons being transported. On the other hand, a local police department might opt for an in cab weapons rack to have the weapons readily accessed in case their weapons are needed quickly.

In cab Weapons Racks sever an important function to the Law Enforcement Officer. They provide a safe and secure way to transport their weapons during their mission. Community patrol and highway patrol alike often have their Shotguns and Rifles readily available. In-cab weapons racks have several types of locking mechanisms for your Shotguns and Rifles as well as handguns ( if applicable). Depending on your weapon type you will need different weapons rack configurations.
